Automobiles were previously manufactured to be as rigid as possible whereas today's autos are designed to crum are designed to crumple upon impact. why?

 

Answer

When a car crumbles on impact it loses momentum before the car is actually stopped so it is not as rough and dangerous for the passengers. This has to do with impulse and momentum.
